seeing white

10 Jun

It’s timmmmme!!

We are finally painting the kitchen and I couldn’t be more excited.

Yesterday we got started on removing all the cabinets and hardware.

Zoe has been teething big time so naps have been pretty non existent, luckily the husband took care of this task. Having done this a lot he was very thorough and organized. He labeled each cabinet and each hinge so we knew exactly where everything belongs.

As the doors came down I started scrubbing them to remove any grease or dirt so we wouldn’t have any problems with the paint adhering.

(I recommend doing this outside as Simple Green is some strong stuff!)

Wow! That was a lot of doors and drawers! 36 to be exact and I have to admit I cleaned about 6 and the husband did the rest. Man is he a work horse.

Here they are all loaded up and ready to be dropped off  to the shop to be sprayed.

20130610-090313.jpg

At the end of the day this is what the kitchen looked like.

I was so eager to organize everything, now that it was all out in the open for everyone to see. Yikes!

20130610-090507.jpg

Now if I could only decide on a paint color. Argh! Picking the perfect white is hard.

Originally I decided on Simply White by Benjamin Moore but now I’m second guessing it because I’m worried it might be too bright of white.

Don’t get me wrong I love a bright white but since we aren’t replacing our granite I wouldn’t want the bright white to accentuate the not so pretty granite.
So my other choice was White Dove, but in our kitchen under our lighting it seems a little yellow, almost a little dull. Eww not a fan.

Here is a sample of Simply White next to our granite and new wall color, which is actually just our living room color Revere Pewter 50% (I’m obsessed)

What do you think? You likey?

Any of you have a fabulous go to white? I’d love to hear them!

PS sorry for all iPhones photos, its just easier when toting around the babe.

the nook

8 Mar

So now that I’ve finished the living room (for now at least) I wanted to start tackling our breakfast nook. It had been previously taken over by the dogs but now that Zoe is eating solids we have really started to use the area again.

IMG_0530

You can’t really tell from the photo but the table was way to big for the space, and now with the addition of a highchair it felt very crowded.

Old breakfast nook

So on to craigslist the table went and in came the new!

IMG 0499

I had been wanting a vintage Saarinen table for a long time now, but damn are they expensive! So I decided to just bite the bullet (after much convincing to the husband) and buy the knock off version from Ikea.

IMG 0473

I absolutely love it! You really can’t beat the price and it’s the perfect size for the space. Yay!

IMG 0503

We also plan to install a built in corner bench, which will free up a lot more space.

So much pretty inspiration on pinterest.

Happy Friday!

Here are some new lovelies I picked up this week.

IMG 9084

I love this $15 rug I found at Home Goods. I’ve been loving navy and white lately.

IMG 9093

IMG 9075

Also found this chevron rug for the bathroom for $12! The colors go perfectly in here.

IMG 9047

IMG 9059

We finally got a West Elm near us and they were having a 15% off sale, so Monday I popped in and picked up some things for the guest bath, like this monogram hand towel.

IMG 9061

and these diamond towels as well as the shower curtain, on sale of course!

IMG 9082

I love to find deals and use coupons any chance I get (my poor husband)

Have you scored any great deals lately?

Will you shop at a specific store just because you have a coupon? I do!

the kitchen backsplash

19 Jan

Wow! Sorry for the very long Holiday break. We’ve been so busy over here with getting Christmas done, finishing up the backsplash, and taking a long over due vacation.

We spent 10 amazing days in Kauai with the whole fam and loved every minute of it.

I also finally took some photos of the completed backsplash. Which I’m still drooling over…

At the last minute I decided to go with the Antique White grout and I’m so glad I did. I really like how it pulls out the lighter color in the granite.

Don’t you just love how the light reflects off the tile.

Woo! So now that that’s done we move onto the next big project….

don don donnnn

the guest bathroom!

I’m so excited to get started, I can’t even contain myself. Unfortunately with the play offs in my way, I might just have to wait until after the Super Bowl.

or butter up the husband with some extra foot massages.

Winking smile

Have a great rest of the week!

tile sneak peek

21 Dec

Hi All!

I’m still exhausted from Monday’s tile install.

I spent most of the day working from home and having nervous anxiety over the grout color.

I thought I was so set on white but then at the last minute changed it to antique white. I’m so glad I did too. I love how it turned out.

I have yet to put the kitchen back together to take better pictures but here’s a little sneak peek for you

The husband loved it so much, he even said “You’re right, white cabinets would look really good in here”

Yeep!! I couldn’t even contain my excitement!

It’s official we will be painting the cabinets white…when will that happen, I’m not sure. Most likely after the guest bathroom remodel.

grout color dilemma

13 Dec

ok real quick..

I’m having trouble deciding on a grout color.

backsplash-samples

White on white pretty much blends and doesn’t really showcase the subway pattern. But then again I like that it won’t compete with our busy granite.

My other option was to pull a color from the granite like a light gray or beige.

Cottage and Creek used the color antique white. I really like the subtleness of it.

So what do you think?! Agh I need help and the tile installer is coming this week!

bye bye ugly backsplash

12 Dec

Hi All! Hope you had a fab and crafty weekend!

Sunday night we did a little backsplash demolition. Yee!

photo(1)

Feels so good to get rid of that hideous granite backsplash.

IMG_8739

And let me just tell you it was not an easy task, the amount of glue they used on those suckers was crazy! So I had to in list the husband for some help.

IMG_8742

We definitely will have to do some patching which we expected. Unfortunately as much as we love our older home, it comes with a price and most all of our walls are bowed.

IMG_8754

After we finished, I noticed a couple of dilemmas. For one I hated HATED how they originally installed the granite on the wood panel next to the fridge. It’s like who does that!

IMG_8755

So I’m hoping after we remove the glue we can salvage it to avoid having to tile over it.

IMG_8759

This section should be a lot easier, the husband can patch and touch up the wall. I don’t know I’m not a fan of tile wrapped around the wall especially when there is not cabinet there.

IMG_8761

And now that the ugly backsplash went bye bye, I could visualize our new tile so much better. We decided to go with a white glossy subway tile.

I’m sooo excited and can’t wait until its complete!

Which will hopefully be this week so stay tuned.

the great tile debate

19 Oct

So we’re doing it!

We are taking the plunge and finally installing the backsplash in our kitchen.

Now for the hard part…tile.

I know I definitely want subway tile, but I’m undecided on which material to use.

I did a quick stop at Lowes a grabbed some samples.

1. tumbled marble

2. tiny subway tile

3. polished marble

4. porcelain tile in bisque

combo of tile1

and here’s what our kitchen looks like now

I can’t wait to rip this off!

I was first drawn to #3 the polished marble but I think it might have to much variation and since our granite is already pretty busy I didn’t want it to be over kill.

So my second option was #4 the porcelain subway tile. It’s shiny which I love because it will reflect the light and I think it would modernize the kitchen.

I did some searching as well to find some pictures of kitchens with porcelain subway tile or something similar.

if only I could paint my cabinets white…

I actually mentioned to Ryan yesterday if he wanted to surprise his wife for Christmas that we could paint the kitchen cabinets white, he would have one happy wifey!

oh how I dream of this one day…

But anyway for now, I’ll stick with what I have.

And now I need your help, which backsplash tile do you vote for?

any or none?

Dining Tables

3 Oct

So I’ve been thinking about getting a new dining table, the one we have right now was a hand me down and even though it’s only 48” diameter it still feels too big for the space.

I really love the idea of a parsons table, because I love the clean modern lines against our antique chairs.

West Elm has one I absolutely love

source

Although it’s only 32” I was hoping for 36” and an option to expand. But it’s a beauty and on sale!

source

Another option would be the Bjursta from IKEA which is expandable.

Although it doesn’t come in white, which I think I could live with.

source

I found a cheap one at Wal-Mart too, who knew. (try to ignore the ugly chairs)

source

After being set on a square table I did come across this cute knock off tulip table from Ikea.

source

I’m really loving the moderness of it. It just feels so clean.

I’d love to hear what you think. I’m kind of notorious for not being able to make decisions, so any feedback is greatly appreciated.
